What is the Anthropic Institute?
On March 11, 2026 Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude models, launched the Anthropic Institute - a public benefit unit dedicated to studying the risks and societal effects of powerful AI. The institute is led by co-founder Jack Clark, who will serve as Anthropic's Head of Public Benefit, and it brings together three existing teams: a Frontier Red Team that stress tests advanced models, a Societal Impacts group that studies ethical implications, and an Economic Research group that examines how AI will change economies.
Why launch the Institute now?
Anthropic expects far more dramatic progress in AI over the next two years and believes the window for society to prepare is closing. The institute will help ensure that AI development is aligned with human values by conducting interdisciplinary research, publishing safety frameworks and engaging with regulators. The company is opening a Washington, DC office and expanding its public policy team to work closely with policymakers.
What the Institute plans to study
- Stress testing state-of-the-art models to identify failure modes.
- Measuring the economic impact of generative AI on jobs, productivity and inequality.
- Exploring social issues like fairness, privacy and transparency.
- Sharing best practices to help organizations deploy AI responsibly.
